This movie starts off with our main character and antagonist Alex. Alex is a violent juvenile delinquent who commits many horrendous crimes with his fellow posse of thugs. Soon after they commit their first failed break-in, the plot of the movie starts to kick off.
Alex and his gang first break into a couples’ house, and graphically beat and rape them. After this, they proceed to try and break into a different lady’s house, but to no avail. She ends up calling the police and Alex is caught and taken into custody. Alex then spends time in prison, and during which, he follows a rigid religion-based curriculum. Through this curriculum he learns about a new state sponsored “Treatment” that supposedly cures criminals of their violent behaviors. And so, with very few details, Alex begins this “treatment”. This treatment consists of using classical conditioning to make Alex feel sick anytime he witnesses or thinks about violent tendencies. This in turn, makes it so that Alex won’t want to commit violent crimes under ANY circumstances.
So, after his “treatment”, Alex is released as a “free cured man” and returns home to his parents, but they deny him a place to stay, so he is now on his own. He is then attacked by his former gang who have now become his enemies. Alex then ends up at the house of the couple he raped and beat, and is tortured by them. In his attempted escape, he jumps out a window and ends up injured. While recovering from his injuries, he unknowingly undergoes brain surgery to reverse the effects of the “treatment” he was given. After public outrage, the government pays Alex a bunch of money, and he remains a free man.
So, the big question: Does the storyline connect and make sense?
As far as we can tell, yes! The plot fits together perfectly and doesn’t leave any plot holes or unanswered questions. Although this film is quite dark, the plot is still fully developed and stays consistent.
The ending may not be what many people agreed with, but the movie kept with it’s theme and plot.
Character Development:
At the beginning of the movie the main character Alex, is overall, just a terrible person. He’s crooked, twisted, and self-centered. He has no reason for doing what he does, he does it just because he wants to.
By the middle/end of the movie, Alex’s character and traits have changed a bit, but that’s only because of the “treatment” he’s received. He himself didn’t actually change, it was the drugs and mental manipulation that changed him.
The Films Highs and Lows:
•The highest point in the movie, the point with the most tension is probably when Alex’s treatment begins because it’s not at all what we expected.
•The lowest point in the movie is when Alex is freed because he’s a psychopath.
So overall…
While this film is dark in its sensitive themes and topics, overall, it’s a really good plotted out movie! The plot keeps you interested and wondering what’s going to happen next, as well as keeping you focused on the events taking place.
So, if you’re someone who isn’t affected by sensitive and/or graphic topics, then this film would be an interesting one to watch!
