We start off the movie being introduced to Marty McFly, a chill and stereotypical “cool kid”. Soon after meeting Marty, we meet the spontaneous Dr. Emmett Brown. From there we learn of the time traveling DeLorean that was created by the Doc. As Marty and the doc are attacked, Marty escapes back to the past. Once there, he encounters a few major problems. With the Doc’s help, Marty is able to solve these problems and return safely to the future.
So, the big question: Does the storyline make sense??
The short answer is yes! This movie’s storyline was quite concise and stuck with the details and facts given at the beginning. Although it’s a movie about time travel, the story was still completely accurate. There were no major plot holes, and everything tied together nicely at the end.
Settings and historical context
Basically, Back to The Future has 3 different settings, being the present, the past, and the future. They’re all in the same place, but at different points in time. Each setting has its own distinctive features, so we’ll be splitting them in parts to show their differences.
Present Day:
· Broken clock tower (years after the event happens).
· Marty’s family life is sad.
· 80s technology and fashion.
Past:
· The clock tower is working (before the time of the event).
· Marty’s family doesn’t exist yet.
· 50s technology and fashion.
Future (the new present):
· Marty’s family seems much happier.
· Technology seems much more advanced.
The Characters!
Though it’s hard to tell at first, there’s good character development throughout this film!
Firstly (and most obviously), Marty McFly’s father, George McFly. At the start of the film, George is a huge pushover, but after his encounter with Marty, George slowly becomes a successful man who stands up for himself., and carries this trait into the future.
Marty also gets some character development as well, though it’s a bit hard to notice. In the beginning, Marty seems like a normal, care-free teen. At the end of the film, Marty keeps those defining characteristics, but also gains more traits. He grows throughout the film, becoming a more responsible and reliable character.
And Finally, the high and low points throughout the movie
The best above all, the climax!
We feel that the climax of this film is at the dance, when Marty is playing the guitar and seeing his picture disappear. This is when everything is put on the line. Will he fix the past and make it back to the future? Will everything be alright, or will the present be erased? This was one of the most suspenseful parts of the film, as everything rested on this moment. It really added to the film as it had a sweet “love conquers all” moment. It showed that even though the past was changed, destiny can’t be fully altered.
We also believe that the lowest point of the film was when Marty realized that he drastically altered the past. This is when it hits Marty that he could fade from existence. Without the meeting of his parents, the current future he knows could vanish. This is the point in the movie when everything changes for the worst.
So overall…
Back to The Future is a really good film! We can understand how it got its placement at number 10 on the AFI’s top ten best sci-fi films! This old classic has an interesting take on the idea of time travel and technology. The plot is well constructed, the characters are very likeable, and it does a good job at keeping you hooked to the story.
We completely recommend this film! This movie is a must watch that you should consider indulging in if you haven’t already!
